Hiking in Peneda-Gerês.

Ecotura offers guided and self-guided hiking retreats in Peneda-Gerês National Park — a different kind of walking holiday in northern Portugal, for those who value nature, rhythm and depth of place.

The mountains around our hamlet offer long ridgelines, forest paths, and quiet valleys shaped by water and stone.

From retreat to retreat, the landscape stays the same — but the way you move through it can change.

That’s why there are two distinct hiking retreats.

What’s the difference?

Both retreats share the same base-stay comfort, mountain landscape, and shared meals. What changes is how your hiking days unfold.

Guided Hiking Retreat

You hike with the group each activity day, led by local knowledge and held by a shared pace.
Best if you enjoy structure, interpretation, and the quiet motivation of moving together.

Presence over performance.

Self-Guided Hiking Retreat

You walk independently, at your own rhythm — with a calm framework of support around you.
This isn’t “no guide, lower cost”. It’s premium autonomy: freedom by day, shared warmth by evening.

Walk independently. Be supported quietly.

Choose your hiking retreat.

Both retreats take place in the same landscape — choose the structure that fits you.

A few quick clarifications.

Most guests only need these answers once — then the right retreat becomes clear.

Are guided and self-guided the same retreat?

No — they’re two distinct retreats. You choose one format for the full retreat (it isn’t possible to switch day by day).

It means you’re not on your own: your stay is hosted and cared for — accommodation, meals, and a calm base in the hamlet — with quiet check-in support when needed.

No. Routes are prepared and shared clearly. If you like using GPS, you can — but it isn’t the focus, and we keep it simple.

Sometimes, yes. While the hiking days remain structured separately, guests may share meals at Ecotura Nature Resort and join the Sunday afternoon visit to the Park Interpretation Centre together.

Still unsure? A short note about your hiking experience is enough — message Anabela.
