Retreat formats
Most Ecotura retreats run as a standard week (8 days / 7 nights), from Saturday to Saturday, with 6 guided activity days.
Selected dates are also available as a short week (5 days / 4 nights), from Saturday to Wednesday, with 3 guided activity days.
Both formats share the same rhythm from Saturday to Tuesday night, with the short week gently closing on Wednesday after breakfast and departure.
Is this for you?
This retreat is for you if…
- You enjoy long days outdoors and feel good walking for several hours at a steady pace
- You’re comfortable with varied terrain (forest paths, mountain trails, high plateaus)
- You value immersion and quiet observation more than speed or performance
- You love places with cultural depth — old bridges, villages, castles, living traditions
- You appreciate a small group and a base-stay week (no daily packing, minimal transfers)
It may not be ideal if…
- You don’t feel comfortable walking several hours on uneven trails
- You want a luxury-hotel style experience (this is a warm, thoughtfully designed mountain hamlet)
- You want a fast-paced trekking week with long distances every day
- You need a fully private, independent schedule every day
What you’ll experience
A week shaped by mountain rhythm: guided walks through remote valleys, ridges and plateaus — with time to pause, notice wildlife, and take in the silence of Serra da Peneda.
A small-group walking holiday shaped by local knowledge, shared meals and the quiet rhythm of life in the mountains.
- Carefully selected routes across Serra da Peneda — chosen for beauty, not just distance
- Ancient shepherd paths, Roman crossings, and forgotten trails linking valleys and hamlets
- Wild rivers, waterfalls and natural pools for a refreshing swim
- Quiet encounters with wildlife: Garrano horse herds are frequent on the high plateaus
- Local heritage along the way: bridges, sanctuaries, castles and mountain villages
- Two yoga sessions for stretching and recovery after walking days
The landscape: Serra da Peneda (Peneda-Gerês National Park)
In the northwest of Peneda-Gerês National Park, Serra da Peneda is a dramatic world of granite mountains, green meadows, oak forests and river valleys carved by waterfalls. This is a place of rare biodiversity and timeless human traces — Roman bridges, mountain paths, and stone villages that still follow the pace of nature.
Your base — Ecotura Nature Resort
You’ll stay in João Alvo — a tiny stone hamlet in the Laboreiro valley, restored into warm and comfortable guest houses. It’s quiet, intimate, and surrounded by forest, with the most magnificent mountain views in the morning, when the rising sun lights up the landscape
- Stone houses with comfort and character
- A studio near the forest with panoramic views
- Peaceful grounds for rest, immersed in nature
- Coffee, tea and fruit always available
