Retreat formats
Most Ecotura retreats run as a standard week (8 days / 7 nights), from Saturday to Saturday, with 6 guided activity days.
Selected dates are also available as a short week (5 days / 4 nights), from Saturday to Wednesday, with 3 guided activity days.
Both formats share the same rhythm from Saturday to Tuesday night, with the short week gently closing on Wednesday after breakfast and departure.
Is this for you?
This retreat is for you if…
- You enjoy walking independently and feel confident navigating well-prepared routes
- You enjoy hiking at a moderate pace (5–14 km/day)
- You feel comfortable on varied terrain (mountain paths, forest tracks, rocky sections)
- You value immersion, quiet landscapes and time in nature over speed or performance
- You appreciate returning each evening to the same welcoming base
- You’re happy with digital route notes and local support rather than a guide walking beside you
It may not be ideal if…
- You prefer having a guide leading the walk each day
- You feel unsure navigating trails, even with clear maps and GPS support
- You want a luxury-hotel style experience (this is a warm, characterful mountain hamlet)
- You’re looking for a fast-paced trekking challenge with long daily distances
- You prefer a fully structured schedule with fixed group timings
What you’ll experience
A week shaped by mountain rhythm — walking independently through remote valleys, high plateaus and quiet river paths, with the reassurance of thoughtful planning and a welcoming base each evening.
Designed as a supported walking holiday, it combines independence during the day with the comfort of returning each evening to Ecotura’s stone hamlet.
This is self-guided hiking done with care: freedom to move at your own pace, yet never far from support.
- Carefully designed routes across Serra da Peneda — chosen for beauty, not just distance
- Ancient shepherd paths, Roman bridges and forgotten trails linking valleys and hamlets
- Wild rivers, waterfalls and natural pools for a refreshing pause
- Open plateaus where Garrano horses roam freely
- Evenings back at Ecotura Nature Resort — rest, good food and mountain quiet
- Clear navigation notes, GPS tracks and local support throughout the week
The landscape: Serra da Peneda (Peneda-Gerês National Park)
In the northwest of Peneda-Gerês National Park, Serra da Peneda is a dramatic world of granite mountains, green meadows, oak forests and river valleys carved by waterfalls. This is a place of rare biodiversity and timeless human traces — Roman bridges, mountain paths, and stone villages that still follow the pace of nature.
Your base — Ecotura Nature Resort
You’ll stay in João Alvo — a tiny stone hamlet in the Laboreiro valley, restored into warm and comfortable guest houses. It’s quiet, intimate, and surrounded by forest, with the most magnificent mountain views in the morning, when the rising sun lights up the landscape
- Stone houses with comfort and character
- A studio near the forest with panoramic views
- Peaceful grounds for rest, immersed in nature
- Coffee, tea and fruit always available
